The Rules of the Game : Jean Renoir

"You see, in this world, there is one awful thing, and that is that everyone has his reasons” - Octave as Jean Renoir As Renoir’s The Grand Illusion [1937] ends with the uncertainty of WWI, The Rules of the Game [1939] begins with the certainty of WWII. Like settings, the themes of class disintegration, tragic-romance, multilingual situations are very close to the prior one. The long and chaotic hunting scenes in the wood are the sure symbolic predictions of futile wars of the imperials is so prophetic in the film. I have seen the same stands of prophecy in Charlie Chaplin & Sergei Eisenstein films previously.

And most importantly semantic dramas and dances staging that give a sign of Nazis Jewish cleansing from Europe. When I was watching Nora Gregor’s acting, I found out that not only did her appearance very similar to Juliette Binoche but her facial expressions are also alike.

Like Chaplin & Godard, Renoir is a true cinema auteur the world has its list. The parallel plots of triangular affairs and adultery between the elite class of Christine-Robert-André and working class of Lisette-Schumacher- Marceau are focused on very playfully but the end of these relations is represented in a very absurd way. It felt a bit bizarre at first but it is ultimately a satire where the unconventional things happen that we overlook nakedly in reality. This kind of sharp-edged satire I have noticed in the films of Ruben Ostlund; specially in The Square [2017] in the twenty-first century’s mode of cinematic narrative.
