With my weary eyes
Going home stocking up my heart with autumn songs!
Ceasing everything that private, - a reverie doesn't last!
Glowing the dusk in pink, - though it is not a twilight!
A nightlong conversation between stars apart,
Our faces covering the earth through the uncut darkness
How have we not meet the darkness just then!
Those we haven't come across in light - appeared to greet us in dark;
Those we have searched for into the dust - in the crowds - through the smoke,
In the dreams we heard the void sound of crock - their brackets' click!
Under the skies- we've seen them by the shimmering stars!
With my vigilant eyes
Swinging from all those days with rising and falling rays - into the coloured clouds!
Coming home in solitude all those days walking on murky moorland!
Dancing like a butterfly in the smoky scent
All those days! - wandering on the stray road
The mirages faded-out, - and fallen apart my fancy doll's houses.

সারাটি রাত্রি তারাটির সাথে তারাটিরই কথা হয়
-জীবনানন্দ দাশ
চোখ দুটো ঘুমে ভরে
ঝরা ফসলের গান বুকে নিয়ে আজ ফিরে যাই ঘরে!
ফুরায়ে গিয়েছে যা ছিল গোপন,- স্বপন ক’দিন রয়!
এসেছে গোধূলি গোলাপিবরণ,-এ তবু গোধূলি নয়!
সারাটি রাত্রি তারাটির সাথে তারাটিরই কথা হয়,
আমাদের মুখ সারাটি রাত্রি মাটির বুকের’পরে!
কেটেছে যে নিশি ঢের,-
এতদিন তবু অন্ধকারের পাইনি তো কোনো টের!
দিনের বেলায় যাদের দেখিনি-এসেছে তাহারা সাঁঝে;
যাদের পাইনি পথের ধূলায়-ধোঁয়ায়-ভিড়ের মাঝে,-
শুনেছি স্বপনে তাদের কলসী ছলকে,- কাঁকন বাজে!
আকাশের নীচে- তারার আলোয় পেয়েছি যে তাহাদের!
চোখ দুটো ছিল জেগে
কত দিন যেন সন্ধ্যা-ভোরের নট্কান -রাঙা মেঘে!
কত দিন আমি ফিরেছি একেলা মেঘলা গাঁয়ের ক্ষেতে!
ছায়াধূপে চুপে ফিরিয়াছি প্রজাপতিটির মতো মেতে
কত দিন হায়!- কবে অবেলায় এলোমেলো পথে যেতে
ঘোর ভেঙে গেল,- খেয়ালের খেলাঘরটি গেল যে ভেঙে।
দুটো চোখ ঘুম ভরে

Poet's Bio:
Jibonananda Das (জীনানন্দ দাশ), a Bengali poet of solitude, imagery and impression, born in Barisal, Bangladesh in 1899. He wrote some beautiful and best poems in Bengali literature. This tranlated poem, "A Nightlong Conversation Between Stars Apart" (সারাটি রাত্রি তারাটির সাথে তারাটিরই কথা হয়) is, inclueded his debut poetry collection book, "Fallen Feathers" 1927 (ঝরা পালক), perfect example of his poetic imagery and philosophical exploration of the meanings of human life and an artistic investigation of reality. His other great Bengali poetry books are notabley : Grey Manuscript (1936), The Beautiful Bengal (1942), Banakata Sen (1942), Great Universe (1944), The Darkness of Seven Stars (1948) and other novels, short stories and non-fictions. He had inaugurated the new wave in Bengal literature along with his contemporary artists. He died in a tram accident in Kolkata in 1954.
